The incident with Mayla illustrates common thought patterns of students who lack competency. It is helpful for teachers to talk with students about common thought holes and even help them practice identifying the patterns when they emerge in classroom discussions. Students learn to point out distorted thinking in their small-group interactions and to identify them in their own perceptions. Even more helpful is showing students how to negate them. Collecting evidence and challenging our perceptions are effective ways to fight thought holes. We can encourage students to gather as much information as possible before deciding to act on or react to a thought. We can also show them how to view their assumption(s) from a different angle.
